In his current role at Kingfisher, Richard leads the DIY concern's Net Positive Plan (NPP), which aims to improve sustainability around timber, energy, innovation and communities. The NPP was launched in 2012 and is similar in scope to Marks & Spencer's Plan A, which Richard led since its inception in 2007. He is also responsible for government affairs and reports to Kingfisher's Chief Executive, Ian Cheshire.

Richard joined M&S in 1984. In his time at the company, Richard worked in stores across the UK and in Canada, held a series of company-wide roles including group head of change and programme management, people development, planning and facilities, executive assistant to the CEO and operations executive clothing. As director of store design and development Richard was responsible for the £1.5bn development and modernisation programme and for central procurement of goods not for re-sale.

Richard is an Advisory Board Member of Criticaleye, an advisor to the Technology Strategy Board and sits on the Business Advisory Board for LWEC (Living with Environmental Change UK research councils).
