John is a leading industrialist with over 40 years experience in the drinks and leisure sector. He was founder and Chairman of Pubmaster (3,500 pubs) which was sold in 2003 to Punch Taverns. He is founder and Chairman of Avanti Communications Plc which he demerged from Avanti Screenmedia and is listed on the AIM market. Avanti Communications launched its first satellite in November 2010 which is specifically designed for the delivery of broadband over Europe. Avanti's second satellite called HYLAS 2 was launched in Q2 2012. It will extend Avanti's coverage to Africa and the Middle East. A third satellite is currently under construction.

John is Life President of Business in Sport and Leisure Limited and was founder Chairman 25 years ago. He is also a Director and Trustee of Springboard Educational Trust, a Director and Trustee of the Bradfield College Foundation and is Vice President of GamCare.

He was the first Chairman for the Sector Skills Council for the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism Industry – People 1st. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list June 2000 (citation: Services to Tourism, Education and Employment). His hobbies include Golf, Tennis, Shooting, Study of Wine and Olives. He has an olive farm in Provence. He is married and lives in London. He has 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
