As well as being a Board Mentor of Criticaleye, Brian's portfolio includes being Chairman of the London Metal Exchange, Non-Executive Director of the Financial Reporting Council, Chairman of the Advisory Board of MHPCommunications, a member of the Offshore Advisory Committee of Mainstream Renewable Power, Trustee of Lloyds Register Foundation, a Governor of Dulwich College, and Chairman of Honda’s European Communication and Consultation Group. He was also adviser to the Board of BSI Group between 2009 and 2012.

Brian retired from the civil service in 2009, having been a Permanent Secretary for nearly 10 years. His final post was at the Department for Business (and before that DTI), where his main focus was on establishing the Department as the “voice for business” across Government, on the Government’s approach to globalisation, and (in his last year) overseeing work on helping business weather the recession. Previously, he was Permanent Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, leading the creation of the Department in 2001. He has overseen policy development in such areas as energy, climate change, wider sustainability issues, and science and innovation, and led work on risk management across Government. He has extensive EU experience, having twice served in the UK Permanent Representation to the EU and, from 1994-98, was Head of the European Secretariat in the Cabinet Office.
